5 Ways to give your Wardrobe a Workout

Updated: Jun 1, 2020

January can be one of the most miserable months of the year, it’s cold, dark and certainly makes me want to hibernate or leave the country for Australia until at least the end of March! However, there are some good things about January, mainly, planning the next holiday!, and the other huge pleasure has to be that Sales have mainly finished and the high street is looking promising for the brighter Spring months ahead.

There are some fabulous trends already emerging from Fashion Weeks all over the world and some great items already in store for us to buy. However, before you go crazy to update your wardrobe, a little planning is helpful to make sure you don’t just end up buying the same things over and over again an. These are my top 5 tips to help you navigate your wardrobe through the changing seasons.

START EACH SEASON WITH A CLEAR OUT

This can be hard to do especially if you’re holding onto ‘memories’ that are attached to your clothes and not necessarily the clothes themselves. If some of the items were trend led or a fashion fad that you are no longer in love with, throw them out. You will feel much better knowing you have a wardrobe full of pieces you love and can see yourself wearing for the months to come.

CHECK IN WITH YOUR LIFESTYLE

Is your lifestyle the same as it was last year or have things changed? If you were working in a corporate job the last time you bought new clothes and now you’re a full-time, stay-at-home mum, it’s time to get new clothes that look great and fit your lifestyle.

INVEST IN GOOD QUALITY BASICS

If you haven’t already, invest in quality basic items that will work with your wardrobe and provide you with a foundation to work with. Items that are made from the highest quality materials that you can afford will never go out of style. Things like a good basic white ‘t’ shirt or polo neck, jeans, knitwear, the trench coat continues to be a great wardrobe staple as we move into the spring as does a great leather jacket.

ADD COLOUR

One of the quickest ways to update your wardrobe is by adding in a new colour, generally everyone can wear most colours, providing the are the right depth and shade for their colouring and if you’ve had your colours analysed you will know there are hundreds of variations and shades to choose from that can instantly brighten your complexion and make you look younger (if that’s what you want!). Lilac is one of the key colours for Spring, along with vibrant pinks, red continues to be prominent as does yellow and lots of pastel colours including blue, purple, lemon and beige.

ACCESSORISE

Just adding an accessory or two can change your look completely. For women, adding a pair of statement earrings or a cool necklace can change the look of an outfit, combine this with a great bag and you can have a completely different look for several outfits. For men, a great scarf or hat can add interest and impact to your casual look or adding a new tie or a pocket square can make a classic suit look updated. A little bit of accessorizing can go a long way to updating your style.
